Introduction to Ancient Egyptian Medicinal Practices
From January through March 2008, I was able to live a dream. Through Columbia University, I studied abroad in Egypt. It began in the Dakhleh Oasis and by the month of March, we were traveling through the Nile Valley, visiting some of the greatest sites in Egypt. While I was already enthralled by ancient Egypt, this trip reinforced my love for all things Egyptian.
It was not all play, however. It was a study abroad experience. There were four classes I had to complete in that time. Three of the classes were interactive with the sites we were visiting and the excavation we were performing in Dakhleh. The fourth class was independent research. We each had to research a certain aspect of ancient Egypt, just so long as it focused, at least in part, on the oases of the Western Desert. Having an acute interest in herbal medicines, I chose to briefly study the medicinal practices of the ancient Egyptians. The result of this research, which spanned a total of four months, was a twenty-five page research paper.
I have decided to present this research here. It will consist of thirteen consecutive blogs, each blog devoted to one small section of my research paper. Please enjoy, and, as always, any feedback is greatly appreciated!
