I apologize if it appeared that I was leaving anyone out. That was not my intention at all. I know very well the numerous individuals working the Dakhleh, having been honored with the chance to visit the oasis through the study abroad program with Columbia University. I was entirely impressed with everyone working in Dakhleh, having met a number of them, including Dr. Mills, Dr. Kaper, Dr. McDonald, and Dr. Kleindeinst.

As an explanation for not going into much detail, this was a paper submitted to a class in the Fall semester of 2011 at the University of Memphis where I am currently a graduate student. I needed to cite the teams I mentioned and could only find websites for the American and Australian teams. In addition, I had only a limited number of pages with which I could work with, so the information I could impart was limited.

Thank you for your comment and taking the time to read my blog. I always appreciate people's comments.

While it's always good to hear about Dakhleh, and this is a condensed summary, it should be noted that Australian and American teams are only the tip of the iceberg. There are also other scholars involved, includiing those from Canada and the UK, who should be mentioned:
Antony J. Mills, Dr. Charles S. Churcher, Dr. Maxine Kleindeinst (U of Toronto), Prof. Mary Mcdonald (U of Calgary), Dr. Peter Sheldrick, Prof. El Molto (University of Western Ontario). In the past Dr. Adam Zielinski has worked on conservation of a temple uncovered by the Dakhleh Oasis Project in the early 1990s.

Antony (Tony) Mills, formerly of the Royal Ontario Museum, was one of the first to direct a project in the Dakhleh Oasis, beginning in 1977 under tthe auspices of the ROM and The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities, and still works there today. Dr. Churcher, Molto and Sheldrick are part of the "Bone Team" which goes out. (In fact, Peter is there right now). Prof. McDonald led an "ground truthing" expedition there in January of 2011.

Also involved are scholars from Leiden, including Prof. Olaf Kaper and Prof. Klaas Worp. Prof Kaper has organized a conference on the work in the Dakhleh Oasis Project for this year.

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I vaguely remember seeing a "sphinx" scarab, and have a half-memory of who and what it was, but I tried to confirm my memory and can find nothing in any of my research. I apologize for not being able to help, but I will not rely on my memory alone.

I will continue looking for the "sphinx" scarab, but at the moment, I cannot say for sure about any details of the figure.

Hi, Erika!

Unfortunately all I have is the word of Petrie in the book "Religions and Conscience in Ancient Egypt" that was republished in 1972. I do not have photographs, I'm sorry.

Best,
